General trading licence in Dubai

One licence, almost any legally permitted product. General trading costs more than a specific commercial licence, and it is worth every dirham the moment your product range starts moving faster than your licence amendments can keep up.

The parts that catch people out

Excluded categories remain excluded

General trading does not cover restricted goods. Alcohol, tobacco, pharmaceuticals, weapons and certain chemicals need specific licences and regulator approval regardless.

You still need a customs code

Importing requires registration with Dubai Customs and a code linked to your licence. We register it during setup.

Free zone general trading is cheaper

But it restricts direct mainland sales. If your customers are UAE-based retailers or consumers, price the mainland route properly before deciding.
Questions

Questions about this licence

In a free zone, expect roughly AED 18,000 to AED 30,000 for the first year depending on the zone and package. On the mainland, the DET fee alone typically sits at the upper end of the commercial range, and once you add the Ejari tenancy and market fee, AED 40,000 to AED 65,000 in year one is realistic.

Any legally permitted product that is not separately restricted. Restricted categories still require their own approvals from the relevant regulator, and some free zones exclude specific goods from their general trading permission.

Yes. Where an activity needs a regulator — municipality, RERA, DET tourism, civil defence, a health authority — we prepare and submit the approval alongside the licence application rather than leaving you to discover it afterwards.
